But lately I’ve been slacking off.

Well, maybe not slacking off. But I just haven’t had enough margin in my life to sit down and do the things that I truly enjoy. It’s pretty frustrating. But I’m in the midst of one of the busiest, most demanding moments of my life.

My wife is 5 months pregnant with our third child. We’re writing a massive Christmas production together (the scale of an episode of Saturday Night Live). I’m producing said show. And my boss just started his month-long sabbatical today. So tack on some freelance projects that I do to be able to pay Annette for feeding, teaching, and caring for my children, and margin is scarce.

Here’s to hoping things mellow out occasionally so I can hear the quiet.

Sounds good to me. Maybe she’ll hit the big time and I can quit my job and start playing golf.

But now I guess I have to start actually writing stuff worth reading.

This would be a good point for me to remind myself of the reasons I blog…

1. To think outloud. Sometimes my head just works more clearly if I put my thoughts in writing. It helps me make decisions, and helps me firm up what I believe and what my priorities should be.
2. To share what I’m learning. Most of what I believe has been shaped by what I’ve read (or what authors have read TO me…gotta love a good audiobook). So maybe some of the ideas I’ve come across that stir me up will get your mind going as well.
3. To remember. My kids do funny things. My life is an adventure. And I’m going to get old and forgetful. I want to have a place to record and process the good times, the bad times, and everything in between. That way when I’m an old man and can’t remember what I had for breakfast, I’ll at least be able to recall the moments that shaped me.
4. To teach. I’m not a teacher by trade, but teaching is one of my spiritual gifts and callings in life. Right now, my expertise is in the area of service programming, design, and a few other oddball things. So while I’m wearing that hat, I figure I’ll pass along some trade secrets that help me and my team pull off what we pull off.

That being said, I’d still love to hear what makes you want to read more. Yes, it’s my blog and I can do what I want with it. But I sure as heck don’t want to be writing a bunch of stuff that no one’s going to read. Wasting time doesn’t fit well with my life goals.
