You’ve GOT to read this post on my wife’s blog…

My wife’s blog is called “More Lucy Than June.” It’s not a guy-centric blog. But if you’re a husband and you want a good look into what is on many of our wives’ minds, it’s a good read.

She wrote this post a little bit ago, and it is PROFOUND. Read through to the end… You’re looking for the punchline.

She’s mine, guys. Sorry.

I think I’ll just walk…

So it cost me $70 to fill up my little pickup last night…with the cheap stuff…with the “Kroger Plus” discount. [choke...cough...faint]

Creative Chaos @ West Ridge: “Acoustic Crash”

west-ridge-church_acoustic-crash_7.jpg I haven’t jumped on the Creative Chaos train yet… Here’s my first ride! Several weeks ago, we put a call out to all people at West Ridge who [1] owned an acoustic guitar, and [2] knew how to play it…at least a little. With some a little preparation, we invited them to show up at rehearsal having practiced two songs that we made available on our website. About 60 folks showed up (we were hoping for 40). They ranged in age from 4 to 70-something. We miked a few, ran a few direct, and then had them lead worship with our band. It certainly created chaos…we called it “Acoustic Crash.”

What should I tell Church Planters this Saturday?

Alright… I need your input. Saturday, I’ll be leading a Service Programming workshop at our Church Planting School. I have some thoughts together, but am trying to weight them based on what will be most helpful to these guys.

So, what do you know? If you’re a veteran church planter or launch-team member, what do you wish you had known about worship service planning/equipment/resources before you started? What kept you spinning your wheels? Flipside: What are you glad you found out before you launched? If you’re a church planter in training, what questions do you have?

Things already on my mind:

  • how to create and develop services
  • who to hire first: worship leader, or administrator?
  • how to communicate with your production/programming folks
  • how to give your Service Programming leaders value
  • how to rehearse
  • what to buy first
  • what software to invest in
  • best kept secrets
  • where to buy
  • mac or windows: misconceptions
  • Help me help them! Comment, por favor, or email me.

    SNL is funny again…

If you gave up on SNL a few years back, it’s time to give it a fresh look. Annette and I started watching again a couple of years ago, and I’m telling you, these are the new glory years. Some of the folks who have been around for at least 5 or 6 years are funny (Kenan Thompson [of Good Burger fame], Will Forte, Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler) but the folks they brought on about three years ago are hilarious (Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader). Things have really taken a turn up since Seth Meyers became the head writer a couple of years ago.

This past weekend’s notable quotes: [compiled by Annette]
    1. la la la la la…death by chocolate! [see it]
    2. Thank you, fellow adult!

    Two-feet under…Now that’s just funny

I’m neither a Yankees nor a Red Sox fan, but this just makes me laugh.

Yes, this is my current hometown. Didn’t even know it existed until I was in college, and I only lived 9 miles from the county line.

    Flush the Mind

Thoughts tonight as I wrap up my week:

    1. Why does it always feel like you need to take a vacation after you get back from vacation? I’m wiped.

    2. I’m sure having a son would be cool, too, but there ain’t nothing like being a dad to girls. There’s no feeling in the world like your little girl saying, “Daddy, you forgot to snuggle.” Then you curl up together, and whisper sweet things back and forth. Nothing in the world.

    3. I love my wife. Not sure why she puts up with me. I’m a loon.

    4. Trying to get my head back in the game this week. Being out for over a week is nice, but it is just enough time to make you feel like you’re starting a new job when you return. Several new volunteers to connect with this week…and several unique things on the calendar.

    5. One of those unique things is teaching at our Church Planting School this Saturday. Gonna bring some Service Programming to the people. Should be a good time.

    6. I hate filing my taxes…EXCEPT when I’m getting a refund for the first time in 3 years. Gotta love the child credit on a year that you add a kid to the fam. But even still, bring on some Fair Tax.

    7. Launching the new westridge.com in a couple of weeks. Getting the keys to the CMS this week. I’ll be driving the turnaround of that since our IT guy is ditching us to start his own company. Curses, Aaron Reimann! Curses!

8.Looking forward to getting back to the gym this week. I’m turning into a toad.

    Visit to Vinings Lake

Last Sunday, I had the privilege of hanging out with the folks at Vinings Lake Church in Mableton, GA. I was on my way out of town with my family, and spending the morning at VL turned out to be the perfect transition from my crazy schedule at West Ridge to some wind-down time with the fam.

Several folks from the VL lead team were on a short-term missions trip to the Dominican Republic, so they asked my friend Paul Richardson to come in to teach for the morning. I got the invite to lead worship for the morning.

I hear that they are experiencing a ton of momentum right now. It’s not difficult to see why. They have taken an older church facility and turned it into something spectacular. The landscaping is top-notch. The building has been painted and drastically renovated inside and out. And the volunteers are PHENOMENAL! I felt welcome from the moment we pulled into the parking lot until the moment we packed up and left.

As a Service Programmer, I was most impressed by their use of space in the Worship Center. Very smart. They’ve taken a pretty basic church sanctuary, turned its focus 90 degrees, and completely changed the environment. The colors are warm, the lobby is cozy. It feels like you’re walking into a well-decorated home. The stage is spread along the right wall, and though I’m sure audio is a challenge with the full band, the teacher and band are close to the crowd. Very easy stage to lead from. They’ve just recently brought in some new LED lighting, trusses, and spandex. I don’t know what it looked like before, but the new stuff fits the room well and created a great backdrop. Nice work!

The team at Vinings Lake should be encouraged. I’m already trying to find an excuse to hang out with them again! Keep up the good work, gang!
