I need one of these…

I need one of these:

Annette is definitely pregnant, and in turn, definitely sick. She gets sick like no other mother to be. We hoped this go ’round would be easier…but it’s worse.

Sooooo, instead of me feeling guilty for going for a jog while she’s at home miserable with the girls, I figure, let’s kill two birds with one stone!

If you know of a jogging stroller (2-seater) OR a 2-seater bike trailer that’s not in use any more, let me know! I’d love to clear out some room in someone’s garage or basement! (I’ll pay fair market value, of course.)

I AM the New American Idol!

So I had this dream last night that I won American Idol. But it was very anti-climactic because the next morning, no one cared. I didn’t make front page of the newspaper. None of the news channels called. I didn’t getting any late night talk show invitations.

What a rip! Isn’t that the whole point?

In my sleepy dejection, I recalled all the criticism that had been circulating the media as the finale approached. “He can sing, but he’s just not as cool as the Idols who have won in the past.” “Did you see what he was wearing? It was like he didn’t even buy anything new for the show. He was just in his everyday clothes.” It MIGHT have been the kind of feeling that a kid may get while walking down a middle or high school hallway…NOT that I would know.

And then I looked at this this morning…

12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Colossians 3:12-17 [nasv]

Is that passage not straight up perfect for us in our Idolizing world? We’re not looking for the vote of the masses. Our faith in God is not a democratic event. The only ‘third party’ who has to certify the vote is Jesus Christ. And there’s only one vote that counts. Winner takes all. It’s His show, and he’s the only judge. He likes the song choice, because He wrote the song. He likes our ‘look’ because He’s the fashion designer. Jesus the all time star mentor. When it’s time to perform, the buzz in the room is fueled by the Spirit of God. And when the finale is over, we’re not dependent on trends, Clyve Davis, or digital sales to make our mark: Our mark is the Word of God, and it will top the charts for eternity.

So, the million dollar question: Why do YOU sing? Maybe you DON’T sing! If not, why do you write? Or draw? Or take pictures? Why do you teach in front of a crowd, or a small group? Why do you write contracts, paint, sell, program, assist? Why do you wake up every morning to the same routine hoping to just keep the kids fed, bathed, alive?

Who is your audience? My dream last night, as big a let down as it was, was a very good reminder that there is only One person in the crowd who is really listening to my song. If others join to sing along, it’s because they’re impressed by Him, not by me.

Everyone needs a Matt W., Jason, Matt T., Randy, and Justin

I spent a solid two hours with my dear friend and mentor Matt Willmington this morning. He is truly one of the most genuine and inspiring leaders in the church today, and I get to call him whenever the heck I want. We talked about all kinds of things, and I left that wannabe Starbucks in the Cedarcrest Kroger energized, confident, and courageous, just like always. He validates my calling, encourages me, tells me like it is, and asks the tough questions.

And then tonight I spent a solid 3 hours with my dearest friends in the world…the guys in my Journey Group. We laughed, poked fun at each other, and talked Johnny’s Pizza shut. Parenting, husbanding, Jesus-ing, following, leading… Our wives were calling wondering if we were okay. We were better than okay. It was probably one of the most raw, honest times we’ve ever spent together.

Who are the mentors in your life? Who are your teammates? Who tells you when you’re being arrogant or self-conscious? Who helps you clarify what you’re hearing from God, or tells you your spiritual ears must be full of wax? If you can’t think of names, keep thinking. They’re there…you just may not be prioritizing the time together.

Do it. Soon.

Gotta love it when this pops up on your screen.

This image popped up on my screen at 11:45pm. Aaaaahhhh… PTO = day off (paid time off)

Today is Annette’s 33rd birthday. I have a few surprises in store for her, but we’re mostly going to chill. Gotta love it. I played a little prank on her today here.

BTW, she’s STILL older than me.

What did I want to be before I grew up?

Something smacked me upside the head at a certain establishment this afternoon. (Can’t say where because Annette’s birthday is Wednesday, and I was at said establishment to buy one of her many very expensive birthday presents).

There was a man at the counter as I was getting ready to check out. He was an older gentleman with Santa-white hair and a neatly groomed beard, and he wore a short-sleeved plaid shirt tucked neatly into Duck Head khakis.

He handed the cashier two copies of the same magazine.

She took them, paused, and then asked. “Sir, did you know you had two copies?”

He smiled and said, “I like to read things twice.”

She grinned and chuckled that awkward chuckle that comes out when you’re a little confused and afraid you just embarrassed someone.

The transaction continued as he thumbed through his wallet.

The cashier laid one copy of the magazine in front of the gentleman as she quoted the total. He paused, dropped his hands and wallet down to the countertop and said, “You just charged me for one of them.” Continue Reading…

Wii MUST get one of these things…

Annette taking on some virtual boxer with an deep-seated rage.So I hear people talking about the Nintendo Wii all the time… They’re Twittering about it… We’re even doing a series by that title at West Ridge here in a couple of weeks. But I’ve never even seen one outside of a store, let alone played one.

I’m not one for video games, usually… Simply because I know myself well enough to know that I’d get addicted and thusly neglect my family and my professional responsibilities.

But our friend Shannon brought her Wii over Saturday night and introduced us. Uh-oh.

Annette and I are pretty darn competitive with one another. [This has its up-sides and its downsides.] Soooo, about 5 minutes into our first Wii experience we were hooked.

After a little Dance Dance Revolution, tennis, bowling, & boxing, the Parrises are officially longing for their own Wii system.

We hear that there are some great games for the tots that would be fun to play with Kenni.

So if you have one sitting around…maybe you’re too busy to play it, or you’ve grounded the kids for life or something, let’s talk.

[Sidenote: You've got to read Annette's recollection of our Wiivening. I almost woke up the girls laughing at it.]

A Chill Weekend…

If you read this post a couple of weeks ago, you’ll be happy to know the Parris fam has finally had a couple of days of relaxation.

Odd Search Phrase of the Week – “Neil Diamond’s Ears”

Yep. That’s right. Someone found my blog by searching for “Neil Diamond’s Ears.” No lie.

Here’s the post that made it possible.

Go figure.

My Life Is Never a Bore

So it’s a few months ahead of schedule, but I reckon God knows what’s up with that. We’re having another baby!

[nervous laughter]

Yes, it’s true. Don’t know for sure, but we think #3 will be due sometime around late January. Should find out soon… First doc visit this Friday.

My shopping list:

bigger house
bigger car
more caffeine
nanny
several days at a 5-star resort
vasectomy

OK… So maybe not the last one. We’ll see how this one turns out first.

If your feelings are hurt that this is how you’re hearing about it, I’m very very sorry. Third time around, I think we just got lazy. :-/

My Wife Is Better Than Me

It’s true. I’ll admit it. I’m the one who nudged Annette to start blogging a few months ago. I even came up with the name and built the thing. But now she blogs like crazy while I am lucky to get in two posts a week. I have people coming up to me at random places saying, “I absolutely LOVE reading your wife’s blog! She’s so hilarious! She should be a writer…or a stand up comic!”

Sounds good to me. Maybe she’ll hit the big time and I can quit my job and start playing golf.

She’s good. I concede.

The proof: check out More Lucy Than June.
